Race Details Released Ahead of 2021 Life Time Chicago Triathlon

Athletes of all levels ready to celebrate the return of iconic endurance event by swimming, biking and running their way through the Windy City; Free rapid testing and vaccinations available on-site

CHICAGO – (August 23, 2021) The Life Time Chicago Triathlon, one of the world’s most recognized endurance races in the world, is returning to the waterways and streets of the Windy City on August 28 & 29. The Life Time Chicago Triathlon provides athletes unparalleled access to the nation’s top metropolis via a protected harbor swim, a multi-level, scenic bike ride followed by a rousing run through the Museum Campus. All courses are wheelchair and para-triathlete friendly. Currently, athletes from 47 states and five countries are registered, with the youngest registrant age 7 and the oldest 87.

Life Time Chicago Triathlon weekend kicks off with a multisport expo on Friday, Aug. 27 followed by Senior and Junior Kids races and the SuperSprint division on Saturday, Aug. 28. The Sprint and International division take place on Sunday, Aug. 29.

Distance breakdowns are as follows:

  • International – .93-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike, 6.2-mile run
  • Sprint – .47-mile swim, 15-mile bike, 3.1-mile run
  • SuperSprint – .23-mile swim, 6.2-mile bike, 1.5-mile run
  • Seniors Kids Tri – 200m swim, 4.4-mile bike, 1.24-mile run
  • Juniors Kids Tri – 100m swim, 2.2-mile bike, .62-mile run

“The Life Time Chicago Triathlon has been a fixture of late summer in the Windy City for nearly four decades and we are thrilled to bring it back after a year off,” said Rebekah Sands, Senior Marketing Director at Life Time. “We simply cannot wait to welcome back athletes and provide them with the race experience they deserve after waiting two years for its return.”

Free vaccinations and rapid testing will be available on-site throughout race weekend:

Friday, Aug. 27

  • Multisport and Fitness Expo at Hilton Chicago: 1:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 28

  • Multisport and Fitness Expo at Hilton Chicago: 10:00 a.m. – 5 p.m.,
  • SuperSprint and Kids Tri at Foster Beach: 7:00 a.m. – 12:00

Sunday, August 29

  • Chicago Triathlon at Grant Park: 8:00 am – 2:00 pm

Other COVID-19 precautions include:

  • Masks required at expo
  • Masks recommended at swim start and post-event
  • A field size reduction of 2,000 participants
  • Increased hand sanitation stations
  • Increase spacing
  • COVID-19 vaccines and testing strongly encouraged
  • Prepackaged grab-and-go recovery food, water & medals

Notable groups looking forward to race weekend include longtime Life Time Chicago Triathlon partners Tri-Masters, whose mission is to expose inner city youth and families to the benefit of healthy living through the sport of triathlon, and Live Grit Soars, which helps young people in underserved communities build physical and emotional strength through the sport of triathlon. The organizations are currently training a combined 75 children for the Kids Tri.

More than 20 athletes will be competing as part of the Dare2Tri group, an organization whose mission is to enhance the lives of individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments by building confidence, community, health and wellness through triathlon. In addition to these special groups and organizations, nearly 600 participants will be first timers.

The Multisport & Fitness Expo, regarded as the top show in sport, is free and open to the public from 1 – 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27 and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Hilton Chicago, 720 South Michigan Ave.
